  Etruscan Museum

“There is no other place enjoing grapevine more than Etruria”. This is the way Pliny the Older celebrated the etruscan wine, two thousand years ago, well known in all the ancient world.From the spirit of the author of the “Naturalis Historia” originated the Museum of the Etruscan Wine, in Perugia at the Colle della Trinità Hotel.

In this place, along the walls frescoed by Omero Bordo, “the Last Etruscan”, the Lucumoni’s wine-making culture is celebrated as a rich inheritance that the Etruscan people left in Umbria, northern Lazio and Tuscany. The Etruscan people let their mark not only in the archeological remains such as hypogeums, jewels and precious art pieces, but also in a wine-drinking and wine-making culture that, even after they disappeared, continued and developed in the customs of the inhabitants of the lands once called “Etruria”.

Wine is a fundamental part of this inheritance. Of course it is difficult, when not impossible, to know wich grape variety, once grown by the Etruscan, could be identified with the present cultivations grown in the regions corresponding to the ancient Etruria area. Too many centuries have gone by, too many evolutions have taken place and too many grape crossbreeds have been grown, to be able to give an answer to the question. There are definetly relations, affinities, similarities between the etruscan wine and the present production. Unfortunately, we still don’t know wich ones they are for sure. What we know is that, today as in the ancient times, the etruscan wines are celebrated for their quality. As the present days sommeliers praise the taste and the flavour of the wines produced in Umbria, Tuscany and northern Lazio, so, two thousands years ago, Pliny the Older suggested to enjoy the wine produced between Tarquinia and Cerveteri and Martial exalted the good taste of the etruscan grapevines originating such a delicious nectar “that you would never stop drinking it”. Continuity in the quality, therefore. But also in the usages and customs related to wine-making and wine-drinking. A Beverage that, now as in the etruscan times, is connected with the idea of convivium, enjoyment and feast.
